A Love Letter in Lessons From My Class

During my month in Peru, I have been awed by the vastness of the Andes Mountains, the scintillating waters of Paracas, and the intricate wonders of Machu Picchu. I have been both challenged and excited by the richness of Incan history and Peruvian culture, finding my perspective somehow altered by every artifact, architectural marvel, and plate of food. And, of course, I have gained so much insight into the Spanish language and the Peruvian way of life in my interactions with local people.

But, in a way that I cannot overstate and never anticipated, I have learned so much about myself and the world around me from the individuals with whom I've shared this life-changing experience and incredible country.

Not knowing what else to do with my gratitude, I have compiled an archive of the lessons my peers and professors have taught me simply by being who they are. I've also included pictures I've taken throughout the trip that I feel capture the unique majesty of each person.

In alphabetical order ...

Blake

Blake taught me what it looks like to lean into individuality. He so refreshingly owns the interests, quirks, and features that make him one-of-a-kind, and whether he realizes it or not, he invites others to do the same. He introduces fascinating trivia facts, openly shares the handle of his Instagram burner account, and teaches those around him his trademark "Blake Shake" wiggle dance; this fearlessness frees everyone around him to also be their true selves.

Claire

Claire taught me what it looks like to be a deeply genuine presence. She holds to her values steadfastly, speaks with true conviction, tenaciously pursues her goals, and stands up for herself and others with unwavering courage. She seamlessly blends gentleness and boldness, honesty and kindness, confidence and humility; she emanates a sense of sincerity that makes everyone want to be around her.

Elvira

Elvira taught me what it looks like to lead a life of love. She freely opens up her heart to those around her and treats every person who crosses her path with genuine care, from little children on the street who need someone to play with to students on this Maymester who could use a warm hug. In a world often lacking in tenderness and affectionate connection, she gives her love--her smile, her kind gaze, her gentle words--to those around her without hesitation.

Emmie

Emmie taught me what it looks like to live life wholeheartedly. In fully grounding herself to the beauty surrounding her, taking every opportunity to experience the world with zeal (e.g. frolicking in fields), and openly welcoming others into her heart, she overflows with a deep passion and radiant energy that can be almost tangibly felt. Her zest for life and profound love for the people and world around her brighten up every space she enters.

Prof. Falconí

Professor Falconí taught me what it looks like to uplift and honor the individuals you're surrounded by. In and out of the classroom, he shows genuine appreciation for all perspectives, values everyone's unique contributions, meets people exactly where they're at, and goes out of his way to respect the particular needs of each individual. As a professor, he fiercely protects the values and individuality of his students, ensuring that they can experience the world in a way that feels truly authentic to them.

Holden

Holden taught me what it looks like to truly stay present and enjoy the simple sweetness of each moment. He does not let the stressors of life get in the way of intentionally making time for the people around him and relishing in his appreciation for the present. His calming presence, easygoing disposition, and ability to not sweat the small stuff have a contagiously relaxing and profoundly peaceful effect wherever he goes.

Lexi

Lexi taught me what it looks like to walk through life with grace and poise. Beyond her put-together style and admirable organizational skills (e.g. the multi-tiered pill organizer with every medicine we could ever need), she carries herself with an elegance that is attributable to much more than her outward composure; it is the clear respect she has for herself and others and the deep grace that radiates from within her.

Marco

Marco taught me what it looks like to find humor and fun in the mundane. The one-liners he mumbles under his breath, the goofy poses he strikes for pictures, and the infectious laugh that he lets out every once in a while transform even the most boring of situations into moments of laughter, silliness, and entertainment. His light and playful presence serves as

a reminder to search for enjoyment in life and not take it too seriously.

Mina

Mina taught me what it looks like to move through the world with dignity and confidence. Everything she does--from the way she walks, talks, and carries herself--exudes a sense of assurance and refreshing sensibility. She knows exactly who she is, and her presence takes on an air of deep purpose. Her self-attunement paired with her direct attitude allows her to hold herself and those around her to high standards, making her a natural-born leader (and likely a future CEO).

Natalia

Natalia taught me what it looks like to be deeply generous in every sense of the word. She loned me the very laptop I'm writing this blog post on after mine unexpectedly broke, and she is the first person to graciously offer her water, her sunscreen, or her cash to anyone who needs it; however, her willingness to give transcends material things. She is generous with her time: in sharing details of her life, in listening to the stories of others, in waiting for people who have been left behind, and in her unshakable loyalty everyone around her.

Neelasha

Neelasha taught me what it looks like to approach the people around me with true compassion and genuine understanding. Her deep, intuitive sense about the human experience and her empathy toward others creates a space in which everyone feels safe, accepted, and fully seen for who they are. Through her tremendous emotional intelligence and natural perceptiveness, she uplifts the people around her with ease and brightens their lives with her lovely spirit.

Paige

Paige taught me what it looks like to know your worth. She holds her head high and glows with confidence because she truly recognizes her value and how she deserves the good things coming to her. She has the self-respecting ability to set strong boundaries and ask for exactly what she wants. In lifting herself up and taking pride in what makes her special, she challenges the people around her to speak kindly about themselves and inspires them to also embrace self-love.

Sam

Sam taught me what it looks like to truly live a life of joy. His vibrant energy projects light onto everything around him, and his natural charisma encourages others to join him in approaching every day with positivity and enthusiasm. With his effervescent smile, propensity for dancing in the street, and habit of throwing up the Anchor Down symbol during photo ops, he adds a warmth and cheer to every situation and makes the world a brighter place just by being who he is.
