As soon as I learned this Maymester would include a visit to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, I knew it was an opportunity I could not pass up. On social media, the journey to Machu Picchu can be depicted as straightforward and picture-perfect, but the reality is that it is far more intricate and rewarding than what those pictures suggest. Our adventure to this iconic Incan site was composed of an array of experiences and pit stops, each of which ultimately contributed to the overall charm of our journey.
Our journey began with a bus ride from Cusco to the quaint town of Ollantaytambo. Along the way, we wound our way through the Sacred Valley making stops along the way. First, we visited Chinchero, a town known for its vibrant markets and traditional weaving techniques and products. Here, we watched local artisans create intricate patterns with alpaca wool and even got to browse the stalls lined with alpaca products for sale. Afterwards, we stopped at Moray, an archaeological site of circular terraces that was believed to have been an agricultural laboratory of the Incas. Our final stop before reaching Ollantaytambo was the Maras salt mines. Witnessing the thousands of salt pools along the side of a mountain was unique and surreal; it was a stark contrast to the green valleys and staggering mountains that surrounded the area.
Arriving in Ollantaytambo, we visited the ruins and spent the night. The following morning, we boarded a train to Aguas Calientes, and the train ride had never-ending views of the alternating rainforest and mountains. Aguas Calientes, located beneath Machu Picchu, is a small town that thrives off tourism, yet manages to uphold an authentic charm. Upon our arrival, we walked through the streets, and were greeted by a diverse spread of eateries and shops selling souvenirs. After a night in Aguas Calientes, we took an early bus ride up a steep, windy road to Machu Picchu.
Finally arriving at Machu Picchu felt surreal; the moment I had waited for since the day I agreed to participate in this Maymester had arrived, and now I have my own photos to show to friends and family at home. Despite the arduous journey, the anticipation was so worth it. The coach bus ride through the Sacred Valley, the scenic train journey, our stay in Aguas Calientes, and the thrilling bus ride up the mountain all added to an appreciation of this sacred place and the journey required to get there.
