I loved every minute of my time in and around Lima. I explored most of the city through the foods. In Lima I ate octopus, empanadas, triples, tacu tacu, fish bone broth, fried fish egg sandwiches, and my favorite, alfajores. Tacu Tacu is a Peruvian dish that is made of fried leftover rice and beans. Triple is a type of sandwich that is stacked with 3 layers of sandwich. The crust is typically cut off of these sandwiches as well. My favorite triples were ones with avocado, egg, and chicken. Alfajor is a dessert where cookies are unified with dulce de leche in between the layers. Accompanying most of these meals, I had a local drink called Chiche morada which is a juice made from purple corn. We also got to try some really cool fruits such as granadilla, lucuma, chirimoya, and tuna. My favorite of them all was the granadilla, it was the sweetest of them all. And of course it wouldn't be a trip to Peru if we didn't try the pisco, pisco sours, chilcanos, and maracuya sours. These are all beverages made of Peru's most famous liquor, pisco, which is made from distilled recently fermented grapes.
While in Lima we also got the opportunity to go on a weekend excursion to Paracas, Ica, and Lunahuana. We visited the Islas Ballestas and saw whales, penguins, birds, and sea lions. The next day we went to Ica. This was my favorite part of our trip. We went to the Ica Desert in Huacachina where we rode in buggies over some pretty large sand dunes, watched the sunrise, and then sand boarded. I was terrified to sand board but had a great time once I started. After sand boarding we went to Lunahuana where we went rafting. Afterwards we went to get dinner and I tried camarones, a dish that had just opened for hunting season that my professor advised to be a delicacy of Lunahuana. I was very happy when I ordered it and found it to be crawfish, a food that I love and know well and it was cooked in a Peruvian way which made it all the better.
